What is a beat?
A Beat is a pause between lines.
You can use a beat to create more space before the next character speaks, or to give a moment in the scene more time.
How long can a beat be?
You can add a beat from 1 second up to 10 seconds.
When should I add a beat?
Add a beat when:
- the reader is coming in too quickly
- a moment needs more space
- there is a pause written into the scene
- you want to control the rhythm between two lines
- you want the next line to land later
What if I want the whole scene to feel slower?
If the whole scene feels too fast, use Response Time instead.
Response Time changes how quickly Linus responds across the scene.
A Beat adds a pause in one specific place.
What if I want the reader’s line to sound more natural?
Use Line Read if you want to shape the rhythm or performance of the actual reader line.
A Beat adds silence before the line.
Line Read lets you guide how the line is delivered.
