What is Line Stacking?
Line Stacking is a line-learning technique where you build your dialogue one line at a time.
You start with the first line, then add the second, then the third, and keep building until the whole section feels secure.
Line Stacking is sometimes called rote stacking.
How Line Stacking works
A simple version looks like this:
- Read the first line aloud.
- Repeat the first line from memory.
- Read the second line aloud.
- Repeat the first and second line from memory.
- Read the third line aloud.
- Repeat the first, second, and third line from memory.
- Keep adding one line at a time until you can say the full section.

Why do actors use Line Stacking?
It breaks the scene down
Long scenes can feel overwhelming. Line Stacking helps you work in smaller, more manageable chunks.
It builds muscle memory
By repeating lines in order, each thought begins to lead into the next one.
It helps reduce panic
Because you’ve built the section step by step, you’re less likely to feel like you’re trying to remember everything at once.
It frees up your acting
Once the lines are more secure, you can spend less energy remembering the words and more energy playing the scene.
When should I use Line Stacking?
Use Line Stacking when you want to:
- learn a scene from the top
- drill a difficult section
- memorise a lot of dialogue
- build confidence before a self-tape
- get off book more quickly
- strengthen the connection between one line and the next
